Voclosporin (Lupkynis™), a novel calcineurin inhibitor, is approved in the USA as an add-on to background immunosuppressive therapy adults with active lupus nephritis. Voclosporin, combination mycophenolate mofetil and low-dose corticosteroids, achieved higher complete renal response rates nephritis than corticosteroids alone. treatment led early sustained reductions proteinuria. was generally well tolerated, no unexpected adverse events. Lupus nephritis, one of most severe complications SLE (systemic erythematosus, chronic autoimmune disease), occurs when immune system attacks kidneys can lead kidney failure. main causes death SLE. (Lupkynis™) drug that suppresses reduces inflammation for use conjunction other treatments suppress system, including corticosteroids. In clinical trials, voclosporin added agents more effective alone preserving or improving function, rapidly reduced proteinuria tolerated. The beneficial effects on function were maintained longer term. first oral specifically expands options available this disease.
